ARGYLL ANCESTORS HOME PAGE

Penny lives at the southern end of Loch Awe in the heart of Argyll, what better place to delve into the area's family histories?
She has spent the last 10 years researching her husbands Campbell roots, and in the process has become a very keen and eager amateur genealogist.
During her research she has amassed a wealth of knowledge, about the old parochial parish records and other tools like the 'Mort Cloth' Register, the lists of 'fencible men' and the 'Hearth Tax' registers of 1694.

She says that once you find one connection, you are intrigued to know more, where were they living? how were they employed?
The census returns available at present in Scotland, begun in 1841 and completed every 10 years to 1901, can be a hive of information. The 1911 census in Scotland is not yet released.

The world of genealogy nowadays can be a minefield, there are so many tools to help you research, but it can be confusing to know where to start. Making sense of the many and varied aspects of family history, from census returns that take you back to 1841, to the Old Parochial records that can reach back to the early 17th century, can be daunting to the newcomer.

If you believe that you may have Scottish roots, why not let Penny help you get started?

She will find copies of original Birth, Marriage and Death certificates, (where available) and give you an insight into the world that your ancestors were living in.

For just £30 GBP Penny will give you:

  • Details from the Birth, Marriage and Death certificates of the subject to be researched (when available)
  • A full written report on the family
  • Details from any census returns, giving you other members of the family
  • Plus any other relevant information available.

Or alternatively, I can spend as much time as you wish on the subjects, but I will charge £10 per hour.

How to get started

Penny will ask you for all the information that you have on the subject to be researched, if you have older relatives, sit down with them and get as much information as you can, names, dates, places etc. and write it down, even the place where grandmother went to school, will give the parish to start your search in.
This makes research easier, so more information can be found more quickly.
